Why is Community Important?

Community is most commonly defined as a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. However, a community can also be defined as a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Community is built on connection, hence the stronger the connection, the stronger the community. Inherently community is a foundational component of health and well-being, interrelated to all of the health and well-being components. On the Wheel of Health, community is the outer circle, holding all the other components together.

It is crucial to develop and nurture a variety of quality relationships which in turn have a positive effect on health. Variety is the spice of life, and a variety of social outlets is no exception to the rule. This doesn’t mean a squad of ride or dies, but surrounding oneself with people who share your interests and goals is sure to uplift the soul. Speaking of ride or dies, it is important to have at least one or two BFFs to provide support when needed. Finally, avoid those emotional vampires, and cultivate the relationships that support and energize you. The key word is boundaries. As often as the word is used, it is essential to minimize the time allotted to turbulent relationships, which can leave you feeling drained and anxious.

Communication is the cardinal rule of connection and community; the three C’s as I like to refer to them. When two individuals communicate well, their connection can only grow stronger, supporting one another when needed. Some strategies that improve communication skills include listening by being present, thoughtful, deliberate, and attentive. Don’t forget to be curious and inquire, using open-ended questions. Using I-statements is a means of speaking only for yourself, and allowing the other person to have their own perspective. This helps to avoid judgment and misunderstanding. These are the perpetual practices of a health coach.

Be well,

Sarah
